Alibaba’s map app Amap and the Singapore Tourism Board launched Singapore Street Stars on 18 September, a set of seven themed rankings covering 104 attractions, neighbourhoods and lifestyle places across the city state, the two partners announced in a joint release.

The lists sit inside the Amap app and follow the Street Stars format Amap introduced a year ago. The seven themes are Photo-Perfect Spots, Where Family Fun Begins, After-Dark Adventures, Next-Gen Crowd Favourites, Nature’s Reset, Curated Finds, and Local Life, Real Finds. Gardens by the Bay, Merlion Park and Sentosa Island appear alongside Joo Chiat Road, Haji Lane, Maxwell Food Centre and Tiong Bahru Market, so the rankings mix the postcard sights with the hawker centres and side streets that repeat visitors look for.

What Amap Street Stars does

Amap launched Street Stars on 10 September 2025 as an AI ranking for the app’s 170 million daily active users, covering more than 300 cities and 1.6 million local businesses at launch, Alibaba Group said at the time. The ranking synthesises navigation patterns and user reviews rather than editorial picks. It also uses user-consented trust metrics such as credit ratings to counter biased reviews and rating manipulation. Amap CEO Guo Ning put it in one line: “Authenticity is the ranking’s core principle.”

Amap backed the original launch with over 1 billion RMB in subsidies for consumer transport and offline spending, and said it expected the lists to bring an additional 10 million daily customers to listed businesses. The Singapore release names no subsidy and no fee for the businesses listed. The lists are live in the app now.

Who it hits

The audience is the Chinese traveller planning or already on a Singapore trip. Amap platform data show the average daily number of users searching Singapore-related content in the 2026 summer season rose 52.3% against June 2026. Attraction searches rose 91.2%, shopping searches 87.4% and dining searches 70.9%. Those are searches on a map app, which means they happen close to the point of decision: which hawker centre tonight, which mall this afternoon.

For a hotel, attraction, restaurant or retailer in Singapore, that makes a Chinese map app a discovery channel with its own ranking algorithm. TechNode Global, reporting the launch, noted that participating restaurants, hotels and retailers gain another route into the travel behaviour of Chinese visitors using Amap before and during trips. A DMC or OTA selling Singapore to mainland clients now has a third-party list its customers will see whether or not the operator’s own itinerary agrees with it.

The timing matters. Singapore Tourism Board’s August 2026 arrivals figures show 1.61 million international visitors, down 0.3% year on year, and January to August arrivals of 11.43 million, down 1.7%. Mainland China was the largest source market in August at 435,440 arrivals, up 9.4%, with an average stay of 3.71 days, according to Travel And Tour World. The one market growing is the one this ranking serves.

What the partners say

Andrew Phua, Chief Representative and Executive Director, Greater China, at the Singapore Tourism Board, said the rankings “rely on actual users’ preferences reflecting authentic recommendations”. Liu Li, General Manager of Amap’s Information Platform Business, said Amap “will continue to explore localised rankings and services suited to different countries and regions”, which reads as a signal that Singapore is the first stop rather than the only one.

What came before

Before 18 September, Amap’s ranking covered businesses in the 300-plus cities of its original launch, and a Singapore business had no entry in it. Street Stars is also different from a listing a business writes itself. Navigation data and reviews from Amap users decide the rank, and the trust layer built to counter rating manipulation filters what counts. That leaves a Singapore operator with one lever: the experience visitors have and what they say about it afterwards.

Key takeaway

Any Singapore hotel, attraction, restaurant or retailer that counts on mainland China arrivals should open Amap this week, find whether it appears in one of the seven lists, and read what Amap users say about it, because that content now shapes the choices of the largest source market. OTAs and DMCs selling Singapore to China should check their itineraries against the 104 picks before a client does. Tourism boards elsewhere in APAC can wait, but we would read Liu Li’s line about other countries and regions as notice that Amap will come calling.

Just last month, the Malaysian Tourism Board faced immense ridicule after unveiling a logo featuring a grinning orangutan and a turtle in sunglasses. The new logo, with its tagline ‘Travel. Enjoy. Respect’, came under fire on social media with people criticising the uneven font sizes and retro-looking illustrations, and almost 8,000 people signed an online petition calling for it to be dropped by the tourism board.

While the backlash in this case was unprecedented, this is in no way the first dodgy tourism logo or slogan to have given everyone a good laugh or a cause to fume.

In April 2016, the Czech Republic created a new marketing logo to promote the country. Apart from the fact that the logo itself is quite boring, it drew a lot of criticism on account of ignoring those holidaymakers who don’t speak English or have a Facebook account. Many said that while it looked clever on paper, and was amusing for a single-use print ad, but it certainly did not make the cut for being a long-term brand identity. Moreover, given the natural and cultural beauty of the Czech Republic, people thought it felt like a ‘disservice to present it in such a neutral and aseptic design’.

In 2014, the Italian city of Florence held an open contest to rebrand itself, and garnered an impressive 5,000 entries. However, according to many people, the results were less than memorable, and the way the concept was executed raised a lot of questions about the interaction of politics, business and design. The winning logo showed four different language spellings of Florence, but the concept was thought to be uncomfortably similar to the identity for city of Prague, which uses four foreign spellings of the city. The entire contest also faced criticism as it appeared to be exploiting designers for a €15,000 prize in return for surrendering all rights to the work, which would otherwise fetch higher prices in the market.

Back in 2012, South Korea was trying very hard to change the country’s international image. While thinking about its national brand, it was facing some unique challenges, like sharing the name ‘Korea’ with North Korea, which at that time, was very confusing for people to comprehend. The country launched a flurry of marketing campaigns describing South Korea – and its capital city, Seoul – as ‘sparkling’, ‘dynamic’, ‘infinitely yours’ and the ‘Soul of Asia’, appearing on billboards and TV channels around the world. However, despite the extensive advertising campaigns, many people felt the marketing was unsuccessful as the logos and branding imparted no clear message. There were too many conflicting images which kept changing all the time. Moreover, the word sparkling was not easy to interpret for many people.

A decade ago, The Hague, one of Netherland’s most beautiful places, unveiled a new logo that would supposedly reflect a modern, cutting-edge sensibility that catapults it into the 21st century. However, the logo that was supposed to express feelings of security, life, progress and playfulness, lacked all of these elements. Many citizens questioned ‘are we even going to call it a logo?’, while some even felt their ‘nephew could knock this out with some water colour paint and a ball point pen’, and some thought the results were ‘uninspired and directionless’.

What do you think of these logos?

For a long time, travel businesses were operating with the objective to move people from one point to another. Now however, they put a lot of effort in understanding their customer and are constantly exploring ways to get more insights on their customers to serve them better. In order to help Destination Marketing Organisations take a step forward in this direction, Amadeus has rolled out a product suite, Destination Insight. It aims to put DMOs in the know with analysis of up-to-date travel data, removing some of the guesswork involved when making key marketing decisions.

DMOs often look at the data about arrivals because they don’t really have a direct link to customers to gauge how their various initiatives and global events impacted the behaviour of travellers. The have to put together pieces of data from different sources with gap of months. The data is then used to draw outline for the next year. However, as the insights are delayed, this cycle doesn’t allow DMOs to quickly iterate based on the data. Instead, there is lot of guesswork involved in the key decisions where they should have better information to act upon.

The suite leverages the travel data to draw actionable insights for destinations. By analysing billions of global air travel transactions in near real time, the suite can reveal hidden opportunities for DMOs to boost their destinations’ growth. DMOs can for example run relevant analyses of traveller searches and bookings to measure, adjust and build more effective campaigns. They can also view bookings to their destination versus competitors to understand who they are most closely competing with and quickly develop strategies in response to market developments.

Steven Valcke, Business Intelligence, Marketing at Visit Flanders said: “It’s becoming increasingly necessary for DMOs to be flexible in their strategies. Thanks to Amadeus Destination Insight, the way we use data has changed significantly. We can monitor, on a weekly basis, the impact of factors such as currency changes on traveller demand in our target source markets and adjust campaigns in response. Having this kind of detailed data allows us to be more responsive to developments.”

Destination Insight is flexible and scalable, and can be used by both emerging and mature DMOs, whether they are monitoring travel at city, country or region levels. Destination Insight has two modules, Top View, and Navigator, which can be used together to maximise actionable insights and equip DMOs to compete for traveller attention in the right place at the right time.

Pascal Clement, Head of Travel Intelligence, Amadeus, added: “One of the most game-changing aspects of big data is that it enables organisations to look into the future and anticipate the needs of customers. Destinations that can understand today’s travellers through data, and respond with targeted, effective campaigns will be well-placed to capitalise on changing traveller preferences”.

The tool very well highlights how the data brands generate can be a powerful growth tool if used right.
Travel is competitive. The number of travellers has grown significantly and proportionally has grown the number of resources available for them to better plan and experience their travel. Often, to cater to these travellers, interesting products come up. However, with so many brands, big and small, competing to reach the right set of travellers, it is often a steep climb for most.

Even with so many options available to the modern traveller and plethora of Facebook pages, there are always some brands that stand out. The ones which we can instantly connect with. Then there are bloggers who pluck the right strings with their stories. The ones who have an army of loyal followers eagerly waiting to read about the next adventure, not just to learn something new but to feel like a part with the stories. What is it that puts these people and brands where they are? What are they doing differently that you should take inspiration from?

We will try to find the answers to these questions and many others at our upcoming event TravelNEXUS. The TravelNEXUS summit will bring the best marketers, tourism boards, travel professionals and content creators from across the country together under one roof. The objective is to help them learn from the best in business and provide a platform to explore new synergies to grow together.

We have an array of discussions and keynotes lined up where domain experts will join us to share their learnings and insights. The day will start with panel discussions on travel blogging and how it is evolving globally. This will be followed by workshop that will put light on the best practices for destinations brands to leverage influencer marketing to their advantage and then for travel startups to get the word out in their early days.

Following the discussions, there will be keynote on how travel and hospitality companies can tailor well for the millions looking at Google to plan their trips. A keynote that will offer insights on unlocking the maximum potential of social channels will follow. We are also offering brands and destination marketers to use the event as an opportunity to showcase their work to masses. If your creative experiments with your brand can serve as inspiration for others, you should sign up here.

Full schedule

The event is supported by hospitality partner Ramada Gurgaon Central and travel partner Plush Escapes. Plush Escapes is a platform for travellers to go off the beaten path to discover unique experiences and getaways.
The Israel Tourism Ministry launched a major TV advertising campaign in India. The objective is to boost tourism in the region by inviting more Indian travellers. The campaign carries a message, “On most vacations, you take a trip. But in Israel, you take a journey you will never forget”. Through this new campaign, they are highlighting the mix of history, culture and a contemporary lifestyle that Israel has to offer.

During 2015, around 40,000 Indian tourists visited Israel which was up by 13 percent when compared to 2014. First half of 2016 also saw a rise in number of tourists from India in comparison to the same period last year. The Ministry of Tourism is looking to further catalyse this inflow of tourists from India with this new campaign and has set a target to host 100,000 visitors from India by 2018. They are primarily targeting the growing sector of middle class Indians looking for new vacation destinations as well as MICE related travel.

India is not the only market they are looking at. The increasing number of Chinese outbound travellers have also contributed to the tourism in Israel. Last year, the number of Chinese travellers in Israel went up by 43 percent.

To cater to these travellers from India and China, the Ministry is also working with various stakeholders in the tourism industry to improve the infrastructure. They are encouraging international hotel brands to build low cost hotels in the country and are also working with carriers to explore the possibility of new flights to the region. With more seats on offer, the costs of travelling to Israel will come down driving more travellers to the region.

For this year, the tourism ministry has pushed up the marketing budgets for Indian market. This new campaign is slated for two months with an investment of around USD 1.5 million. The TV campaign will be accompanied by advertisements in consumer print media and on social media platforms. They have also carried out various travel trade promotions in India and have hosted influential personalities from India to catch the attention of Indian travellers.

You can find more information about tourism in Israel at www.goisrael.com/in.

It’s interesting how social media has transformed the art of story-telling. It’s no more mundane and repetitive. There have been instances where DMOs have leveraged the reach of social media to create fascination amongst travellers. Kerala Tourism has been an active Destination Marketer for as long as we can track down. They have had interesting concepts that bring out the true essence of being in Kerala and belonging to Kerala. In bringing out more travel engagement, Kerala Tourism had commenced an Instagram campaign three weeks back.

The story included various Instagram accounts participating in creating a game. With a very primitive and basic start out, the story builds upon the life of a corporate professional. It depicts that de-stressing is the bottom line at any vacation. The VisitKeralaFunTrip game aims at finding the “Mirror of God” as an objective which is accomplished by creating overlapping accounts. Permutations and combinations of various Instagram accounts are what propels it to life.

The whole story encompasses a plethora of activities that the main character embarks upon. From learning Kalari to laying on the black backwaters, from hopping on a jungle safari to spotting a snake boat in waters, the game proceeds with levels where there are always two outcomes to a situation with one leading towards the Mirror of God. The Mirror of God end account takes the traveller to the official website of Kerala Tourism in a hope to find solace when one plans Kerala.

This kind of endeavour in marketing a destination has started to see new horizons on social media. It has started to pick up quite well with the travellers and people have started finding a new angle to look at a destination.

Here’s how the Kerala Tourism is telling stories.

Virtual reality has been there for a while now. Travel space is reaping huge benefits from the new possibilities it has to offer. Enhanced guest experience is what primarily everybody is focusing in the traveller’s lifeline. 360 videos are doing a lot of round in travel space. How the power of these videos can be used to deliver information phenomenally is still under construction, but the marketers are gearing up to experiment now. Destination marketers are not far behind in the race. There have been visible instances that destinations were and are leveraging 360VR videos to their maximum benefit. Let’s take a look at them.

Australia

Tourism Australia did a really nice coverage on its Northern Territory area. The video takes the viewer to an expansive Katherine Gorge and its surrounding areas. This being a recent initiative, Tourism Australia along with Qantas has also covered Hamilton Island’s breathtaking 360 footage.

British Columbia

British Columbia did a marvelous shot back in the autumn of 2015. The video Wild Within takes the viewer into the wild corners of the country giving them a raw experience of nature.

Las Vegas

Vegas has always something interesting and insightful to show. The marketers have paired a couple of videos around the place about certain attractions that are depicted so well in the 360 video format. The shots are lit up with the grandeur of the place. One can only see it,to believe it.

Brazil

The Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur) came up with an amazing campaign in 360 videos format to capture the spirit of FIFA World Cup in 12 hosting cities. The campaign Brasil360 was highly impulsive and drew a lot of travellers to experience the first-hand experience of what they saw virtually.

South Africa

South Africa Tourism Board came up with a 360 video format initiative and created a wholesome experience. The South Africa Tourism UK posed this campaign on their Facebook page. It was immersed in reality and the experience was breathtaking.

With 360 videos making a lot of buzz, content marketing might shoot up the roof with new trends. Let’s hope to catch them soon.

Singapore Tourism Board along with MasterCard to promote a tourism campaign they have planned to lure Indian travellers to the destination. The campaign features father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor encouraging the #FulfilAPromise initiative to the audiences.

MasterCard and the Singapore Tourism Board aims to target the Indian travellers growing in numbers to propel their annual vacation to the international destinations. They are swarming the social media with #FulfilAPromise so that Singapore is kept as a preference on the bucket list of visiting places.

“With summer vacations on the anvil, consumers in India get ready for the upcoming holiday-travel season. We wanted to bring the best of experiences and delight for our cardholders that truly money cannot buy. Experiences like such can be shared and enjoyed with people who matter to you,”

said Mr. Parag Bhatnagar, Vice President, Marketing, South Asia, MasterCard.

The campaign concludes on 6th May 2016. It requires you to share your experiences as a MasterCard holder on MasterCard India Facebook Page or/and Singapore Tourism Board Facebook page on how you have fulfilled promises to your families. One grand prize winner of the campaign will get a curated stay experience in Singapore and 10 minor reward winners will be awarded a three night’s getaway in Singapore. The minor rewards will be announced for every week of the campaign period and a grand prize winner will be announced in the second week of May 2016.

Few thoughts this campaign drives:

#1 Instilling emotional connect

The hectic life demands us of so many things. One that’s almost ignored and kept on the backseat is spending quality time with our loved ones on the grounds that will understand. The campaign takes the for-granted spirit of working parents and instils in them a promise that should be fulfilled. The card holders will win a handsome and exciting vacation in Singapore to fulfil their promise. Spending quality time with the ones who deserve the most attention. Enough said.

#2 Exclusive MasterCard privileges

This comes down to market the experiences that money-can’t-buy theme stands by. The MasterCard holders will have access to various privileges designed and shared with people who matter to them. MasterCard’s Priceless Singapore will connect people with their passions –shopping, travel, food and entertainment – and gives select access to a collection of exceptional experiences across the city.

#3 India is a growing market for APAC tourism industry

Encashing on the recent numbers provided by the MasterCard Asia Pacific Destinations Index (APDI) that stated that APAC is a fast growing tourism economy, Indians hoarded the destination with numbers of travellers increasing steadily. It crossed a million mark in 2015 with respect to the influx of Indian tourists. Singapore Tourism board hopes to keep the rate steady with this marketing campaign.

Singapore Tourism Board has established few other campaigns to promote the destination very actively. Its last one, Singapore Invites, was based on similar lines; Connecting families to enjoy their experience in Singapore and live their Singaporean dream. This one, however, captures the woes of a working parent and how they are unable to fulfil their promise to the little ones. The veteran actor, Anil Kapoor spoke about how the initiative is creating a surge of responsibility amongst all these people. The daughter, Sonam Kapoor, reminisces how she regretted as a kid that her father couldn’t take out enough time for her. She furthers that campaign aims to establish that lost bond of communication amidst parents and children.

Singapore is at a threshold of booming tourism where various cultures and eclectic lifestyle infuse. According to data from the Singapore Tourism Board, Singapore received over one million Indian travellers last year, an increase of 7.4 per cent travellers from 2014. MasterCard’s partnership with STB is to boost the experience of MasterCard cardholders travelling to Singapore.

With the increased internet penetration and exponential growth of businesses in India, innumerable digital marketing organisations have come into existence in the past few years. Instead, as per the article, the digital marketing industry is booming high with 40% growth rate. Consequently, the number of online marketers for destinations has increased too.

Formulating a good marketing strategy for tourism is vital for online travel marketers. It plays an important role in coordinating business activities, eliminating interferences and maximising profits. We have listed few key points below that might be highly useful for digital travel marketers.

Tapping into the needs and emotions of customers

Online travel marketers must keep in mind that creating an immediate need for destinations is a crucial element. There are different methods of carrying out this process. Online marketers can post attractive photos of cuisines, off-beat spots, flora and fauna related to the place. Interesting facts can be revealed too. This will grab the attention of trippers within seconds and bring higher engagement in the online medium. Beyond this, the format of the content should be gauged. For example, online videos might not be the best option in India as internet speed is drastically slow here. More innovative forms of content like gif animations and cinema graphs can be considered. Another aspect that is deemed necessary is bringing a sense of emotional connection between the people and the products/services. If a photo of a destination reminds the trippers of a particular travel experience, the travel brand can perform exceptionally well in the market space.

Focusing on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter

Social Media platforms can be extremely useful for online travel marketers. Beyond attracting tourists, it assists the trippers in shaping their travel plans and decisions. Timely and positive feedbacks on people’s reviews can encourage travellers to re-visit the destinations. Online reviews, Facebook comments and Twitter posts can impact a destination’s attendance. One exemplary social media campaign has been #MeetSouthAfrica. It had produced 9,000+ tweets, 77.8 million tweet impressions and 1,059 photos on Instagram. Needless to say, it had grabbed the attention of many people worldwide and promoted South Africa in a major way.

Relevance of SEO

Travel SEO is visibly different from the regular SEO. People while making travel plans usually do lot of research online. As per the reports, they search queries usually consist of long tail keywords. For example, instead of just typing ‘holiday’, they might look for ‘safest family beach holiday’ or ‘best places to visit in South Africa’. For good SEO, content should be developed in a similar manner. Also, linking few parts of it from reliable and popular websites can put the content in a more noticeable position in the search engines. Such tricks should be considered while designing the marketing strategy.

Listing in popular websites

Online travel marketers can enlist their products or services in sites like TripAdvisor, Hipmunk, Flightfox and BookingBuddy. Similarly, they can associate with travel bloggers to increase the visibility. Getting their content across through blogs can be a good marketing technique. Hence, the brands can easily expand their businesses, achieve maximum exposure and obtain monetary benefits later.

Travel PPC should not be set and forget

Travel industry is third largest in paid searches. Some easy tricks can help your Adwords campaign outperform and get worthy return. AdWords should never be set it and forget it, but with travel, pausing seasonably irrelevant campaigns, making adjustments to ad text, and monitoring locations, time and hour of the day are even more critical to avoid wasting large sums of marketing spend. Not only searches but in order to promote your destination, marketers must put their sweat and tears into display advertising. Use of captivating visuals with some compelling strategies like re marketing can do wonders in small budgets.

These tips should help all the Destination Marketers frame their digital strategy. If you have any additional points to add on, do let us know!
