<p><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash" target="_blank">#SoMeT15US</a>, organized by <a href="http://destinationthink.com/" target="_blank">Destination Think</a>, was held on October 14th and 15th at Harrah’s Theatre, New Orleans. The objective of this business conference was to assist different destinations &amp; brands become stronger on social media and thereby add more value to the digital industry. To know more details about this particular conference, you can go through its <a href="http://www.sometourism.com/somet15us-conference-information/" target="_blank">webpage</a>.</p>
<p>Here are some interesting tweets that emerged from #SoMeT15US:</p>
<h3>#1. The essence of Marketing</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Keep your marketing simple, subtle, &quot;embrace what others say&quot; about you, put the DNA of your people in your marketing <a href="https://twitter.com/FCuypers">@FCuypers</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash">#SoMeT15US</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Social Media Tourism (@SoMeTourism) <a href="https://twitter.com/SoMeTourism/status/654411070099038208">October 14, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong><em>Our Take:</em></strong> Frank&#8217;s tweet points out a basic but relevant point ignored by marketers frequently. At times products and services offered to the customers do not meet their needs or demands. Understanding the pulse, the minds of the people and emotional needs of potential customers is really important. Marketing, as a practice, needs to be flexible. Just as too many cooks might spoil the broth, complicating the process of marketing unnecessarily does not work well.</p>
<h3>#2. The power of visuals</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Images get 5x the engagement as text-based posts &amp; the #1 thing that makes images memorable is people. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash">#SoMeT15US</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Rachel Ann (@xRachelLew) <a href="https://twitter.com/xRachelLew/status/654339934963134466">October 14, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><em><strong>Our Take:</strong></em> A picture is worth a million words and the same is true for social media. We take less time to process images as compared to text and that is why images get more engagement as compared to text. Using more graphics and photographs will drive up the engagement for your brand account. Adding people to photos works even better as compared to photos that don&#8217;t include real people.</p>
<h3>#3. Intuitive Blog-posts- Your SEO Goldmine</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot; Our blog posts are the most valuable &amp; underrated asset we produce because they have huge evergreen SEO benefits.&quot;-<a href="https://twitter.com/LandLopers">@LandLopers</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash">#SoMeT15US</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Molly Allwein (@molly_vstpgh) <a href="https://twitter.com/molly_vstpgh/status/654705281813733376">October 15, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><em><strong>Our Take:</strong></em> Professional blogs of companies are either not updated frequently or totally neglected. Various studies have suggested that blogs can drive close to 50 percent more traffic on the website of a business. This underscores the importance and value of corporate blogs. SEO plays a significant role in the online world and blogs can play an important role in increasing visibility on search engines.</p>
<h3>#4. Social Media is just inevitable</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot;Be careful what you wish for, the spotlight is now on us &amp; we have to deliver.&quot;- <a href="https://twitter.com/wilhelmus">@wilhelmus</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash">#SoMeT15US</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/endgame?src=hash">#endgame</a> <a href="http://t.co/5OTuW5vCtT">pic.twitter.com/5OTuW5vCtT</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Molly Allwein (@molly_vstpgh) <a href="https://twitter.com/molly_vstpgh/status/654776033246183426">October 15, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><em><strong>Our Take:</strong></em> Nowadays it is hard to find people who don&#8217;t use social media. Even the baby boomers are actively using platforms like Facebook to share stories and find content that interests them. People don&#8217;t just look up for brands on Google anymore. They search for Facebook page or Twitter handles as well and that is why it is important to have strong social media presence.</p>
<h3>#5. Reputation = Return on Investment</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot;Reputation is our ROI&quot; says <a href="https://twitter.com/seanmdixon">@seanmdixon</a> at <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15US?src=hash">#SoMeT15US</a> Crowdsource inspiration from consumer-written reviews and content</p>
<p>&mdash; ReviewPro (@ReviewPro) <a href="https://twitter.com/ReviewPro/status/654724493387038720">October 15, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><em><strong>Our Take:</strong></em> Sean precisely summed up the use of social media for marketing. Brands often try to measure social media ROI in terms of sales or leads but that is a debatable approach. While social media can drive sales as well, it should primarily be used to build an image for the brand and give it a character with the right messaging. For travel brands, social media can be used to inspire a traveller to take a journey rather than selling a destination package.</p>

<p>While our team was busy at IAMAI&#8217;s <a href="https://www.travhq.com/industry/spotlight/etailing-and-travel-commerce-conference-starts-tomorrow-what-to-expect/" target="_blank">eTailing and Travel Conference summit</a> in New Delhi, some of us in the office were also keeping an eye on the final day&#8217;s proceedings at #SoMeT15AU, which was organized at the picturesque venue of Sunshine Coast, down-under. The <a href="http://www.sometourism.com/about/" target="_blank">Social Media Tourism Symposium</a>, also known as SoMeT, is the only conference of its kind that provides an opportunity for destinations and tourism businesses to share ideas and learn how to leverage social media within the tourism industry. The event is held each year in Australia, Europe and the United States and is organized by <a href="http://destinationthink.com/" target="_blank">Destination Think</a>, a strategic consultancy and marketing agency.</p>
<p>Here are some of the top tweets from <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/somet15au?src=hash&amp;vertical=default" target="_blank">#SoMeT15AU</a>.</p>
<h3>#1 ROR over ROI</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Effective use of <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/socialmedia?src=hash">#socialmedia</a> should focus on ROR {return on relationships}, not ROI {that will follow over time} <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15AU?src=hash">#SoMeT15AU</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Jen Evison (@JenEvison) <a href="https://twitter.com/JenEvison/status/623647792330706944">July 22, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong>Our Take:</strong> Quite often as marketers, we question the value of every dollar spent in the beginning of our marketing efforts. However, Social Media is as much about building relationships with your community as it is about drawing return on investments.</p>
<h3>#2 The Thumb-rule of Destination Marketing</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Over 73% of travellers decide on going to destinations from photos &#8211; Jessica Quinlan <a href="https://twitter.com/TripAdvisor">@TripAdvisor</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15AU?src=hash">#SoMeT15AU</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Social Media Tourism (@SoMeTourism) <a href="https://twitter.com/SoMeTourism/status/623697279036174337">July 22, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong>Our Take:</strong> Travel is about inspiration and it comes as a no surprise that the best way to inspire is via engaging photographs of your destinations. People believe in a place so much more once they see real pictures telling them visual stories.</p>
<h3>#3 Incentivizing your Traveller</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Give travellers wifi and you will receive content. Simple effective advice from <a href="https://twitter.com/ckjchambers">@ckjchambers</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15AU?src=hash">#SoMeT15AU</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Ben Vadasz (@benvadasz) <a href="https://twitter.com/benvadasz/status/623676810941845504">July 22, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong>Our Take:</strong> Despite all the tech developments, the accessibility of WiFi across many destinations continues to be a challenge. Enabling seamless free WiFi would create many conversations about your place as today&#8217;s traveller is truly mobile and loves to use his smartphone for everything from doing a check-in to using periscope to share his live experience.</p>
<h3>#4 What&#8217;s your Digital Marketing Budget</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Tourism New Zealand&#39;s marketing budget is 90% digital. In some markets 100% digital. &#8211; Andrew Fraser <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15AU?src=hash">#SoMeT15AU</a></p>
<p>&mdash; William Bakker (@wilhelmus) <a href="https://twitter.com/wilhelmus/status/623663223451967488">July 22, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong>Our Take:</strong> Tourism NZ&#8217;s allocation of digital marketing spend is a classical lesson for Indian destinations and those in the SEA region. While there is a gradual increase in the overall digital marketing budgets, we are still quite far away from achieving the feats of Tourism New Zealand.</p>
<h3>#5 Does you Destination have a Powerful Story?</h3>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" width="550"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">&quot;It&#39;s up to us as destinations to unlock powerful stories, bring them to a wider audience&quot; &#8211; <a href="https://twitter.com/charelvandam">@CharelvanDam</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SoMeT15AU?src=hash">#SoMeT15AU</a></p>
<p>&mdash; Social Media Tourism (@SoMeTourism) <a href="https://twitter.com/SoMeTourism/status/623634204639776769">July 21, 2015</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p><strong>Our Take:</strong> As they say, story or nothing <img src="https://www.travhq.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/simple-smile.png" alt=":)" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> If your destination doesn&#8217;t have a powerful story to tell then think about creating one.</p>
