Five stories this week, four of them from Asia, and each lands on a decision a hotel, airline or OTA leader has to take within a quarter: connectivity as a product, open-network distribution in India, an airport selling its operating model, AI booking at the front door, and a visa fee that repriced a bilateral market in seven days.

1. Korean Air switches on free Starlink from 15 September

From 15 September 2026, long-haul passengers on Korean Air get Starlink satellite internet at no charge, according to Travel And Tour World. The same outlet calls the carrier the first full-service airline in East Asia to give Starlink away, and reads the move as the start of a wider shift on passenger connectivity across the region. The number that matters is zero. Once one full-service carrier gives satellite internet away, a paid Wi-Fi tab on a competing long-haul product becomes something passengers notice at booking, not at 35,000 feet. Every airline commercial team in APAC now has to decide whether connectivity is a fee, a loyalty perk or part of the fare, and the decision has a date on it.

2. Visa and ONDC look at inbound discovery for India

Visa and India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce are working on how arriving visitors find what to do in the country, a report this week said. In the same week, at GFF 2026 in Mumbai, NPCI showed a unified ticketing product and extended RuPay credit on UPI to the US and UAE, per Inc42. Put the two together and the direction is clear. India’s payment rails and its open commerce network are being pointed at inbound travellers, not only at residents. For a hotel, DMC or attraction selling into India, the question is how your inventory shows up on a network where no single OTA owns discovery. That is a distribution decision, and it needs an owner inside the company before the pilots harden into standards.

3. Incheon puts its playbook up for sale

Incheon, which now ranks as the busiest hub in the world, wants buyers for the way it runs the airport, Nikkei Asia reported. That changes what an airport is. Incheon is treating its operating model as a product with customers rather than a cost centre with passengers. Every airport authority and tourism board in APAC that is building or expanding a hub now has a vendor holding the busiest-hub credential. Expect the pitch to arrive with the data, and expect the buyers to ask what the airlines and ground handlers at Incheon get out of it.

4. AI booking gains ground in China and South Korea

Travellers in China and South Korea are taking to AI booking tools fast enough to trouble the traditional agent, Travel And Tour World reported this week, with Fliggy and Eastar Jet both widening digital booking as demand in the two countries rises. On the destination side, Nikkei Asia reported that Huawei has launched an AI tourism promotion service for the Xi’an region. Two countries, two ends of the funnel, one week. The intermediaries losing share are the ones whose value was access to inventory, and access is now table stakes. The desk’s view is that advice, accountability and a human to call when the itinerary breaks are what survive, and those are the parts most agents have been slowest to price.

5. China raises its visa fee sevenfold for Japanese visitors

Japanese visitors to China now pay seven times the previous visa fee, a change Beijing attributes to reciprocity, per Nikkei Asia. Seven is the number. For a Japanese corporate travel manager or a Chinese DMC selling to Japanese groups, that is a cost line that moved in a week with no product change behind it. Policy-driven pricing belongs in the demand forecast, not in a footnote to it, and the revenue teams that model it will price better than the ones that read about it afterwards.

The fortnight’s event board

WiT Singapore 2026 at Marina Bay Sands has Agoda, Google and companies from more than 30 countries confirmed. Malaysia Airlines has signed seven partnerships aimed at growing Asia Pacific tourism, which gives the partnership panels in the region something concrete to argue about. For organisers: the week’s stories converge on one topic, agentic and open-network distribution in APAC, and a panel on it needs someone who has built on these rails rather than only read about them. If your autumn agenda has that slot, I am taking invitations. Write to the desk.

Key takeaway

The pattern this week is Asia deciding first and the rest of the market reacting. Free satellite Wi-Fi, an open discovery network for inbound India and an airport selling its operating model are product decisions that used to be cost decisions. Pick the one nearest your P&L and put a number on it before the quarter closes. The carriers, hotels and platforms waiting for a Western benchmark will end up answering to one set in Seoul, Mumbai or Beijing.
