The airline food is usually nothing worth talking about, and it isn’t something airlines highlight often. In most cases, it is ‘decent’ at best. Singapore Airlines however can make an exception here. The highly awarded airline not only receives appreciation for the excellent in-flight entertainment and on-board amenities but also for employing celebrated chefs to offer quality in-flight dining experience. In their latest video they have tried to draw attention to this dining experience and judging by the numbers so far, they have pulled it off well.

Singapore Airlines offers a ‘Book the Cook’ menu with which it allows travellers to book meals from a menu featuring exclusive options upto 24 hours before departure. Through the recently released video conceptualised by Dentsu Mobius, they have showcased the dishes from this menu. However, instead of taking the obvious approach of featuring the chefs preparing the delicacies, it created miniscule versions of the dishes with a tiny set of utensils.

The video was released on October 19 and since then, it has got close to 2.4M views and 8K shares on Facebook and 600K views on YouTube. It features various elements including miniature stove with candle flame, grills and utensils that are used to create small size dishes thoroughly following the preparation process, only at a smaller scale. The video very well puts light on what they have on offer and sends the message of how attention to small details can enhance the overall experience. The impact is also indicated by the fact that someone actually tried to recreate it (without much success).

This isn’t the only video of its kind though. They have released another video in the past which featured a designer crafting miniature aircraft seats of all the seat categories the airline offers. The latest video was followed by a behind the scenes video as well which features the artist and the massive effort that went behind the not-so-simple video. These videos go very well with their communication of delighting the customer by paying attention to small details. No wonder Singapore Airline is among the very few carriers for which the sentiments on social media platforms aren’t negative. And that is something praiseworthy in an industry dealing with baggage losses and unexpected delays on a daily basis.

Two weeks back, KLM introduced a series of weirdly humorous videos. The videos were just made around letting people know that it is in fact an Airline and nothing else. Why, you would ask. Because their recent brand study revealed that many American consumers believed that KLM is a radio station or a milk brand. So the company set off to address that with a dash of humour to drive awareness.

American actor and comedian Ken Marino got onboard to create series of silly and shouty videos in which he zips around a blue set with arms stretched like wings. In another video he describes what appears to be a romantic encounter with a lady while speaking of the flight attendant. The other videos describe airports and passengers in a similar fashion.

The campaign executed with help from creative agency Moustache seems to have clicked very well with the audience. In two weeks, the campaign videos have collectively generated close to 300K views on YouTube alone, certainly should have helped KLM spread the word that they are not a radio channel, and certainly not a milk brand.

While the brand was clearing the air to let its message fly, it also used the opportunity to attract some new fliers through a microsite. It featured simple games meant to educate about KLM and also giving an opportunity to earn loyalty points with frequent flier programs. The microsite attracted close to 8K visitors in a matter of days just in month of August according to estimates by SimilarWeb. It will stay live till the end of November.

You can check out all the video on their YouTube channel.

With the Christmas approaching, brands are getting into the festive mood. A large number of people travel around the festival making it a good time for travel brands to promote. Air New Zealand joined the Christmas celebrations with two very creative videos.

The first video called Santa’s Workshop features one aircraft hangar, lot of little elves, Santa and the Air New Zealand crew. New Zealand is long way for Santa to travel so Air New Zealand is giving him a hand in wrapping and delivering the presents. The video starts with dozens of kids and adults dressed as elves packing gifts to be distributed by Santa. The gifts are carried to an Air New Zealand aircraft by Santa who enters the frame on a luggage car. The video ends with Santa presenting the boarding flight to the crew.

To shoot this ad video, Air New Zealand used the hangar of Nelson Airport in New Zealand. The kids that are seen in the video are primary school students from two of the schools in the region. The video has been created by New Zealand based ad agency True.

This isn’t the only Christmas ad from the airline brand. While in the first video Santa is setting off to deliver the gifts, the second video shows the story of a little kid named Archie. The kid has recently moved to Otago in New Zealand and is not sure how Santa will find a way to him this year. His father, with Air New Zealand engineers, ensures that Santa knows where to stop by creating a landing pad.

The video has managed a strong emotional connect with the audience and is being loved by a large number of people. Clearly indicated by the fact that this video has got more than three times the views despite being uploaded 4 days later.

What other Christmas ads by travel brands did you find interesting? Do share with us.
