If you don’t get it right, your job as a Content Marketer can pose some serious questions. When you see those crazy number of comments on the “Great Ixigo Travel Quiz“, you are like I could have done that too or when you see Lonely Planet’s numbers skyrocketing on Social Media, you tell your buddy, it’s all because of the cult status of the brand. If that’s not enough, your mind says give me the ad-budget, I will show you how I can do a launch campaign like Yotel Singapore, though viral content marketer Aashish Chopra strongly advocates not running after paid views.

Sometimes you hate content marketing to the core as your day job isn’t about those viral content pieces, the client (if you’re an agency) or the boss (if you’re on the brand-side) wants you to follow the content calendar, push the brand as he has got sales on his mind. You question yourself, question your content’s value and whether your efforts are doing any good for the brand.

Image Source: Free Vectors via www.vecteezy.com

This brings us back to the game of “Content Marketing”. What really it is? Simon Kemp, recently wrote a great post on finding content ideas.

He starts of by defining the key goal for a content marketer i.e. ‘Create content that delivers increased brand value’

I am lifting the below image directly from Simon’s blog where he has emphasized that you should maintain the balance between the needs of your audience and what your brand wants to say. Quite right, if you go on addressing your brand’s needs without considering what the audience want, there will be a big disconnect.

Not being able to balance the needs of your audience is the key problem with most content marketers today. A lot of us are too obsessed with the brand – this is what our brand has to offer, this is how we can change the consumer experience. But on a second thought, are we thinking about what our consumer wants.

In a mobile-first world, where your content is competing for attention span in the news feed, think about why, just why would the audience really care about your message. What is the value you are delivering to them?

Start with Content Discovery

Using Answer the Public, you can find some great ideas on what the audience is actually searching for. Imagine your hotel wants to promote the newly opened Chinese restaurant in its premises. As a content marketer you might want to discover what do people want are people searching for? Answer the Public, gives many combinations depending on user search queries and the below are just some of the example search results.

Trends around What:

What is Chinese cuisine

What characteristics make Chinese cuisine distinct

what is authentic Chinese cuisine

what is northern Chinese cuisine

Trends around Why:

why Chinese food is healthy

why Chinese food is so good

why Chinese food on Christmas

Break the Daily Content Routine

Fixed publishing schedule is one of the reasons why most content marketers cannot imagine contagious marketing ideas. You have daily goals for content and are under regular pressure to produce box office hits everyday. Instead, break the daily posting cycle and change it to an optimum frequency that’s most relevant for your brand and audience. Initially, it might require some convincing however if you can show the value, change can be brought in.

Provide useful information to your audience

Rendezvous Hotel Singapore does a great job of giving tips on nearby surroundings.

They also do a good job of linking customer testimonials with relevant images from within the hotel. In the below image, they have linked the wedding image with customer’s feedback message.

ParkRoyal SG is targeting the Instagram generation with its thematic series #parkroyalpicks. The question that they have to ask is who is their audience and whether they will go to Instagram for these backdrop shots.

Speak the language they understand

Wanderlust, a hotel in Little India is targeting the voyagers and millennial generation with its smart messaging and break the status quo content. The hotel seems to be targeting the travellers and not the tourists, the adventure theme of the hotel is well supported by relevant creatives/copy.

Quincy Hotel, another boutique hotel at Mt Elizabeth in Singapore is using a unique teddy toy to talk to its audience on Social Media.

The teddy is a cohesive part of the brand’s communication strategy on Social Media.

The above post is a part of multi-part series to examine the “Content Marketing” landscape in Singapore & India. While we have started with hospitality industry, going forward, we will be delving into more industries within the travel landscape!

It was about 6:30pm in the evening, there was nip in the air and a perfect time to drive back home. But when you are supposed to get on a call with veteran travel entrepreneur, strategic business advisor and founder of Travel Startups Incubator, Matt Zito, one won’t mind staying in the office. I spoke with Matt last week and he shared some wonderful insights about Travel Startups Incubator, the startups they have invested in so far and the launch of their India operations.

Travel Startups Incubator was launched about a year and half ago in September 2014 by Matt and his wife Nicole S. Zito. Later they hired Mike Coletta in November 2015 as the Managing Director. Mike brings to the team, 14+ years experience as a travel entrepreneur and travel tech organiser. The three of them work on a day to basis building the company.

Travel Startups Incubator has raised $1Million from a venture capitalist in UK and Dubai to invest in 30 companies. The program is $25,000 and they work with startups via a virtual Global Incubator program for 6 months. The program is less of an incubator and more of a business and strategic marketing advisory where Matt & his team help startups move the needle with their business-development relationships in the travel industry.

Travel Startups Incubator funds, advises, mentors and provides business development services to travel startups across the globe

How does Travel Startups Incubator work?

The virtual incubator has an advisory & mentoring team of 15 high level travel executives from Amadeus, Facebook and others who have built multi billion dollar companies. Each startup gets one or two mentors to work with them during the 6 month program which works out very really well.

The company is also building a global travel technology investor platform and has approximately 150 investors in its database. This platform aggregates all companies that have received investment from Travel Startups Incubator and are aiming to raise further capital. The system acts as a private pool where all startups can upload their pitch decks, information about the company, management etc. Investors are also sent monthly reports which keeps them in the loop about who is doing what and their growth traction etc.

Why is it different from other Startup Incubator Programs?

While the Travel Startups Incubator program is of 6 months contractual commitment, the TSI team continues to work with those who are succeeding or have a potential to succeed in the near future. For instance, they are still backing 4 of the startups and helping them grow the company after making an initial investment in 2014.

As Matt says, “The reality is in the startup world, it takes 3 years to build a company. While there are guys in the online world getting acquired in 12 to 18 months for their technology or team, the underlying foundation of doing business is to build a profitable one with revenue”.

From L to R: Mike Coletta, Nicole Zito and Matt Zito

The real value of Travel Startups Incubator is with its business development network across the travel industry. They have built a strategic alliance with Amadeus, the leading GDS & IT Tech solutions provider in the world. In addition, they have business development relationships with Skyscanner, easyJet, Emirates, Tahiti Innovation Labs and many more.

Matt adds, “Our bigger vision of what we’re trying to do is through the advancement of technology, evolution of investing online, someday travelstartups.co will enable for any travel startup in the world to raise money via our platform”.

What makes Travel Startups Incubator different is that it typically invests in alpha/beta stages, which means the products are either not built or are ready to show. Having said that there are few companies that are in their first year, generating some revenue and are looking at raising some funds.

Travel Startups Incubator in India

Travel Startups Incubator will be represented in India by InnoveLaw, a Mumbai based law practice firm. Its presence in India was always on the cards as Matt says that currently they get 40 to 50% of startup applications from Indian travel entrepreneurs. India is the number 2 country behind United States in-terms of the overall website traffic.

The incubator has invested in 14 companies so far and has just made an offer to an Indian travel startup company. The company will be the first Indian startup in the Travel Startups Incubator program. Travel Startups Incubator usually takes a startup it likes to an in-discussion, relationship building phase where they monitor the startup’s growth for two to three months before making an offer. For instance, they are now tracking multiple tours & activities startups in India for the next 60 to 90 days and will possibly make an offer to one of them in the next couple of months.

TravHQ Take: What Indian Travel Startups need to know?

Travel Startups Incubator program presents a fantastic mentorship opportunity for all Indian travel entrepreneurs who are working on exciting ideas. The cumulative value of the incubator is far higher than the pre-seed/seed funding investment of $25,000. The team has a strong network in the travel industry which can provide the right impetus to all startups who’re looking to grow to the next level.

To learn more about the incubator and apply for funding, visit the program website. If you have any questions about the application process, please email them to matt@travelstartups.co.

After all that hard work to get the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) of your travel startup rolling, you get a sense of soul satisfaction and inner happiness when you see your product live on the Play store (Alright, we mean the App store for all the iOS fans). You were always waiting for this day, right from the moment when you had initially thought of the idea and were going through those milestone marathons with your dev & design team.

As one would agree, releasing an Alpha or a Beta of your product is just the beginning of a long journey and a battle half-won. While on one end, you work on continuously improving your product, the challenge on the other end is to get the product in-front of your users, investors and the media fraternity.

<img class="size-large wp-image-64883" src="https://www.travhq.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/10630181683_fe2888fd70_k-1024x475.jpg" alt="Image Credit: Flickr/Sonia Su.
You might have a killer idea but at the end of the day, it all comes down to nothing if you can’t put the message across about what you do in a clear & concise manner. So whether you are presenting in-front of a packed house or simply meeting a group, here are some helpful tips to overcome that communication challenge:

#1. Passing that 1 minute test

In an age of 140 characters, perhaps even 60 seconds might appear big to many. But when some one asks about your travel startup, can you explain it to them in under one minute? I have seen many entrepreneur pitches where after the end of the presentation, they are asked the fundamental question, “So in a nutshell, what is it that you do?”.

If you don’t have a 60 seconder pitch, it’s time to get working on one

#2. Those first few words

No points for guessing this one – But the beginning of your presentation is very crucial. While you are presenting with an aim to leave an everlasting impressing on your audience, those first few seconds are vital in setting the rhythm of the entire discussion.

With so many things at the back of your mind, focus on how you want to start right from the very beginning. Is it your introduction (if so, why will people care about that?) or your startup’s introduction or or the industry problem you are solving.

#3. If you are presenting, look into the eyes of your audience

So who should be more comfortable when you are pitching in-front of a packed audience? Don’t try to lean on the podium or let your hands hide in the pockets, even though it feels more relaxed for you that way.

Irrespective of the number of people who are listening to you, look into the eyes of your audience. It will make them feel special and connected to your talk.

#4. Answering that eternal question, ‘How are you different?’

Be honest to yourself, there is a strong probability of your travel startup operating in an extremely competitive space. Especially, if you look at crowded segments such as Budget Hotels Aggregators, Trip Planning or Itinerary management.

So when it comes to the question of being different, think about that little difference which separates you from all others in the fray. It could be your approach on the front-end or a back-end problem or you could be looking at a completely different market all together while solving the same problem.

#5. One last thing, Rehearse & Rehearse

Be it the genius Steve Jobs or CEO & Co-founder of Liquidity, Victor Hwang, there is one thing common across all generations of great entrepreneurs. They all used to practice and rehearse their talks. According to a Forbes story, “Steve Jobs made presentations look effortless because he put in a lot of effort to get everything right”.

No matter how good you are when it comes to talking, always make it a point to rehearse, what you want to say. It will give you great confidence before you step on the dais or meet a bunch of potential investors.

If you are from the travel industry and have any mantras on cracking the communication bubble, we would love to hear them out.

It isn’t surprising that big data trends are a number one priority for travel marketers these days since they help to analyse & successfully predict customer behaviour and improve the overall conversion funnel. While the implications of travel data are huge, it can be used to great effect by deeply looking at how consumers are interacting and making transactions during their travel journey.

Mountain View based travel intelligence company Adara is one organisation, analysing the consumer data and providing strategic insights to a number of travel industry organisations across the globe. Their recent Series C funding round of $23 million further reinstates the belief that travel data has a huge potential in the coming days.

Overcoming a shaky Wi-Fi connection, I managed to catch-up over a Skype call with Adara’s Jonathan Hardy who currently leads sales strategy and operations in Asia Pacific. Speaking from his hotel room in Hong Kong, Jonathan talked about a number of things including the company’s vision for South-East Asia and APAC.

Jonathan Hardy, Lead – Sales strategy & APAC Operations, Adara

Based out of Singapore, Jonathan leads the sales team for the APAC region which also houses Adara’s ad operations team. The company has formed partnerships with a number of sales houses in Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines to extend their sales reach in these respective markets. Jonathan also mentioned that the company is in the process of formalising their presence in Japan.

In Singapore, Adara has a data partnership team that is actively approaching OTAs, airlines, hotels, meta-search sites and all businesses who have a consumer facing website used by customers to book and plan travel.

Is Data Security a Concern?

With over 320+ million monthly unique traveller profiles, the company ensures data security with its proprietary platform Magellan.. Their tech co-founder Charles Mi who is an ex-IBMer has ensured that Adara’s platform is robust to manage data, identify users and serve advertising across the web. As of today, Adara works with multiple partners within each travel category including hotel groups, airlines & OTAs. It leverages data on their behalf to help them monetize the data and use it to deliver their own targeted advertising.

Part of this comes through trust, where Adara segments and uses data in a way so that there is no leakage between different competitive partners. Adara has a variety of policies and each data partner has a lot of control including filters on who can/can’t use data. At a campaign level data partners, get to approve or reject which builds on their trust. On a top line basis, Adara is also working out industry policies and guidelines that ensure trust among stakeholders.

How can Adara help the travel industry?

Where Adara can really add value to the travel industry is by leveraging the data to its true potential. The data comes in from various sources such as hotels, airlines, meta-search companies and the challenge is to tie it all together. With its platform Magellan, it is providing a holistic view of the traveller for players in the travel ecosystem with real time customer views and behaviours. This could mean anything from the path to booking or identifying the lost customer (For instance suggesting recommendations on choice of a hotel depending on user’s past behaviour and recent flight booking or offering an upgrade deal to customers about to travel)

When I asked Jonathan about their customer set in Asia, he said, “The big US travel companies are represented world-wide. We are working with the Asian arms of Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton Accor & Intercontinental etc. We have also signed with a leading South-East Asian Airline, we’ve signed up with a number of OTA partners in the region such as hotelscombined.com and Travel.jp in Japan”.

What’s next in the region?

Jonathan is bullish about Adara’s growth in the region despite starting their operations only 12 months ago. Their impressive line-up of advertisers includes Singapore Airlines, Fulton Hotels, Banyan Tree and a bunch of leading homegrown Asian players. Con1`sidering that their head of business-development is from India itself, one can expect them to make some rapid strides here too.

Right now, Adara is actively working on plans for 2016 part of which would be focused on how to take advantage of the new funding. The belief shown by their Japanese investors further makes a strong case for Adara to make deep in-roads in this part of the world. To learn more about Adara, visit www.adara.com.

I must admit that I was caught in two minds whether I should really purchase an Apple Watch with all the backlash it had received since its initial launch. Critics had labelled it as a device which was lifeless without an iPhone. There have been a bunch of viral tweets and posts where users have actually thrown the watch into their trash can after failing to find its true utility. Despite all this, the Apple fan within me still wanted to have a look at it.

Back in July, I finally stepped into the Apple store at the IFC Mall in Hong Kong where I purchased the 42mm space gray variant with a black sport band. 42mm watch fits my wrist size perfectly and I thought it was fair to start off with a budget buy in a wearable category which was going to evolve with time. While going back to my hotel in MTR, I was thinking if I had made the correct purchase decision and whether I really needed to spend approximately Rs 24,000+ INR on a normal looking watch which to most others appeared nothing more than a toy. Comparisons with the much cheaper Moto 360 by Motorola started looming in my mind. I thought it was enough, I went back to the mall and returned the watch to the smiling executive, who happily refunded the entire amount.

The next morning turned out to be exactly opposite! I was convinced by friends that I should buy an Apple Watch, as I was contemplating a replacement for my regular watch and it was a nice idea to pick up something which was going to be in demand in our home country in sometime. Back then, it hadn’t launched in India and as I write this, the Apple Watch isn’t still available for sale here.

So, should you really care about Apple Watch as a Traveller?

I knew it wasn’t going to change my life and create a significant impact over and above the existing line-up of gadgets I use. I knew it would be more about convenience than actual usage. I have been using Apple Watch as my everyday watch for about two months now and have found it to be particularly useful during travelling.

#1. It’s your backup boarding pass

While passbook hasn’t really picked up in India there are places such as movie halls where I have used it to gain entry into the theater. While entering the airports and railway stations, people are now increasingly showing their tickets on the mobile devices. Having said that, I was once told by the security guard to present a paper based ticket as the email was barely readable. Under such circumstances, the flight notifications on Passbook in Apple Watch can provide an easy verification mechanism without the need to carry paper print-outs. For situations, where you need a paper print-out a boarding pass on Apple Watch will always act as your backup.

#2. Convenient Travel Itinerary

This isn’t a real utility but certainly a cool feature to have. ClearTrip was one of the first OTAs in India to make an app for Apple Watch and MakeMyTrip followed soon with their own version. I like the way you can see your upcoming hotel-stays with quick ease on the watch when the app is launched. This is particularly great when you need to quickly recall the hotel address on reaching the destination.

#3. Keep Track of the distance travelled during your trips

Travelling to any destination means intensive walking. Especially, if you are travelling abroad when you are exploring new places, you ask people for directions and end-up walking quite a bit. While you can use third party-apps to track the distance travelled via your smartphone, you won’t be doing that every single time you walk out of your hotel room.

Your watch monitors your activity and you can see how much you have travelled during your trip

#4. Handy Feature for Business Travellers

I haven’t played around much with the watch faces honestly. But one of the things that I do like is what you can see on your watch face. If you are travelling for business purposes you can view your next meeting time at the raise of a wrist. You can also see the temperature at the bottom left and little things that you can customise as per your need.

#5. The Need to Carry your Charger if you are on a 3 day trip

Here is perhaps the most irritating thing about the Apple Watch. You need to charge it almost every second day. I must also admit that the charging cable is terribly long and makes you think twice whether you should really pack it with all those other things. So, I wanted to see how long does the battery of Apple watch last if you don’t carry its charger along.

I took my fully charged Apple Watch for a 3 day trip and left for the airport early on in the morning. I knew this was going to be the ultimate survival test as it had to support me for almost 72 hours as I was only coming back by midnight on the 3rd day.

Well, I did end up returning with a switched-on watch with about 9% remaining battery but that was only because I had used the ‘Power Reserve’ mode. Also, I had to turn off the Apple Watch on both the nights to save some power.

I must admit, that the battery leaves a lot to be desired. The much fancied ‘Power Reserve’ mode does extend your battery life but at the expense of limiting down all other features. You can’t use anything other than just checking out the time. So during my trip, I was always looking at the remaining battery in my Apple Watch and switching modes to extend the life.

#6. Feature which is irrelevant as a Traveller and perhaps otherwise too

There is a call feature with which you can call people around you using the watch’s microphone, but I don’t think anyone would ever use that. Why would you want to use a speakerphone while travelling when it’s barely audible. Apple Watch’s call feature works in quieter places but I don’t think that’s of any use too.

Unlike the Garmin Fenix 3, Apple Watch doesn’t have its own GPS which really limits down its ability to work without an iPhone.

Bonus Traveller Tip that comes with a Catch

There’s one feature which is less talked about as I think people are still trying to find it’s real utility while travelling. The Apple Watch has a camera app which essentially mirrors the camera on your iPhone. So you can use it as a remote device to click beautiful pictures by positioning your iPhone the way you want.

.

But here’s the catch! In most cases, you would a need a tripod on which you can mount your iPhone. This actually means you can also use the timer on the iPhone making this utility a little redundant unless you want to take your own sweet time before snapping a picture.

To finish it up, I have had a decent experience with the Apple Watch so far. I won’t say, it’s been a completely transformational one to an extent that I have stopped using my iPhone. However, if you are looking for a regular watch that does a couple of fancied things then this might be a handy purchase. I am not sure about the India pricing but the word is that it should be atleast 5k higher than the Singapore or Hong Kong prices. These are still very early days for Apple Watch in the travel industry. Internationally, Air Canada has launched an update where flyers can view the status of flights departing within 24 hours on their Apple Watch. It will be really interesting to see equivalent apps by Airlines in India. The much hyped, OS 2 update was supposed to be released earlier this week but that has been delayed for now due to a critical bug. The new version should hopefully bring in more enhancements for the travel community.

If you have been using a smartwatch for travelling, I would love to hear your experience

You reach the Terminal 1D of Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi for an early morning flight to Mumbai. The moment you step-in, your mobile receives a new notification on where your airline counter is. You also get an exact direction and the distance i.e. the number of steps you have to take. Once you receive your boarding pass and proceed towards the security check, you get a notification on your departure gate making the whole flying process a cakewalk!

Welcome to a completely whole new way to travel with Beacons! What we are talking about isn’t the future of travel. Beacons have been already implemented across many airports, hotels and even points of interests in different countries and expect this to be a part of your travel experience at the world’s best airport sometime very soon.

Beacons by Estimote, Inc: One of the most popular companies out in this space.

What are Beacons?

Beacons re-define the customer experience in physical retail and at all touch-points where there is a real-time interaction involved. Simply speaking, beacons ride on BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to push targeted and contextual messages to your mobile app the moment you walk-in within their proximity. BLE enables transmission of messages over short distances with a range of few meters using little battery power.

Here is a quick look at how your entire experience is bound to change with Beacons:

Your Hotel Stay

Trouble-free checkin experience

When you check-in to any hotel in India, you undergo a typical drill at the reception where you have to share your passport/photo-id copy (example your pan-card), hotel reservation voucher and then the room is allocated to you. We are so used to a paper driven approach! This adds to your anxiety and if the queue is long, it also tests your patience.

With beacons, your check-in will happen in a jiffy as it will auto detect your name, contact info & your booking details once you step-in to the hotel lobby!

Keyless entry

Starwood hotels, one of the earliest adopters of this concept has implemented a program called SPG Keyless™ available via SPG® app which enables its guests to have a completely keyless entrance and use their smart-phones to open their room door-locks.

Guests simply need to download the app on their Android or iOS device and need to configure it to receive notifications from a participating property if it has a keyless program implemented. The feature is available to Starwood Preferred Guests and is available across a list of worldwide properties. Unfortunately, none of the Indian cities are present in the list at the moment.

The SPG iOS app

Configuration of Keyless settings on the SPG iOS app

Imagine beacons guiding you about the restaurants in your hotel, their timings, in-room dining services and what not! It opens a whole new world of possibilities altogether

Beacons in your favorite museum or architectural property

Every time you visit a Museum, you either hire a guide or prefer to be self-guided. You stand in-front of those wonderful pieces of art, wondering about their significance and try to read behind the history. Sometimes you get bored and in a way it even limits your experience at these locations of historical significance.

But Philips Museum in Eindhoven is trying something unique with its interactive iBeacon game called Mission Eureka. Watch the video to learn more!!

Does sound exciting indeed? You never know what’s in-store for you, the next time you visit Delhi’s National Museum or Charminar in the city of Nizams

With seamless availability of GPS being a challenge in India, beacons might just provide the much needed boost to the Indian tourism & travel industry. Know of any Indian travel brands using beacons in an interesting way? Do share them with us!
