One thread ran through this week’s travel news, from India’s national digital tourism stack to Airbnb’s call on AI agents: whoever holds the booking relationship holds the power, and several players spent the week deciding who else gets to touch it.

1. India’s national digital tourism stack is a state-run booking layer

India’s Ministry of Tourism and ONDC are building a National Digital Tourism Stack, Skift reported on Saturday. It is an open network that connects homestays, guides, attractions, experiences and transport into one bookable layer. That is five kinds of supply in a single network, much of it supply that private platforms have struggled to list well. For Indian OTAs and DMCs, the question this quarter is whether their inventory and booking systems can plug into an open network, because a buyer who books through the stack never needs to know their brand.

2. Thai Airways changes its chief executive

Thai Airways’ board removed CEO Chai Eamsiri this week. Director Samrit Samniang, a former PTT Exploration and Production executive, is acting CEO. One person now speaks for the airline, and he comes from the energy sector rather than from aviation. Distribution teams at OTAs and agencies that hold Thai Airways fares or content agreements should confirm who owns those conversations while the seat is filled on an acting basis.

3. Agentic AI for missed connections wins in Singapore

The Alibaba Cloud x Atlas Agentic AI Hackathon ended at WiT Singapore, where live pitches ran on 30 September and the winner was announced on 2 October. Participants built on Atlas flight APIs that cover more than 140 airlines, and the prize was up to USD 5,000 in cash plus USD 4,000 in Alibaba Cloud credits. Web in Travel reported that Globe Planner, founded by Victor Gaya, won from 461 applications and 46 completed submissions. Its multi-agent copilot replans missed connections. Northstar AI and YuanFen were the runners-up. The result points at where agentic AI travel tools are being aimed first: disruption, the moment a traveller most needs help and an airline or OTA is under the most pressure to give it.

4. Airbnb keeps AI agents away from its bookings

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said the company is unlikely to let outside AI agents such as Meta’s Muse make bookings, Nikkei Asia reported. His argument was short: “Planning travel is entertainment.” Airbnb is choosing to keep the booking relationship in its own app, even if that means staying out of a new channel. Hotel groups and OTAs face the same choice, and they now have a large peer that has answered it.

5. Mews goes the other way on guest messages

Mews launched Guest Messaging and Automations on 2 October, according to Travolution. The company says AI handles up to 80% of routine guest questions, and that one in three guest messages currently go unanswered. In beta, 47,000 workflows ran. For a hotel, an unanswered message is a lost upsell or a bad review waiting to happen, so the figure that matters is the one in three, not the 80%. Hotels that automate the conversation with guests they already hold are making a different bet from Airbnb’s, and a more modest one.

Who to watch

Ben Dias of IAG speaks at the Skift Data + AI Summit Europe in London on 6 October. Airline views on who controls the customer, and on how AI fits in, are likely to get a public airing there.

Key takeaway

This week showed three routes to the booking relationship: build the network, as India is doing, keep the app closed, as Airbnb is doing, or automate the conversation you already own, as Mews customers are doing. We would ask every hotel, airline and OTA leader to write down which of the three they are on before the next agent asks for access. The answer should be a decision, not a default.

Between 21 and 27 September 2026, AI agents moved into every stage of the trip: the border in Bangkok, the booking screen at Agoda in Singapore, and the front desk of franchise hotels in the US.

Five stories from the week set the agenda for OTAs, hotels, airlines and tourism boards this quarter. Each comes with a number, and each comes with a decision attached.

1. Agoda AI assistant: 6 million stays in one chat

Agoda opened a limited beta of its AI Assistant to a select group of mobile app users, with the announcement made from Singapore on 25 September. Every app user gets it over the next few months. Trips are planned against live stock of more than 6 million places to stay, 130,000 flight routes and 300,000 activities. OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 powers the assistant, and Google Gemini’s Grounding with Google Maps handles the harder itineraries. Why it matters: the idea and the booking now sit in the same chat inside the OTA’s app, and whoever owns the inventory keeps the traveller.

2. Dextr AI: US$6.7 million for hotel agents

Hospitality start-up Dextr AI closed a US$6.7 million seed round, about Rs 64.2 crore, led by Elevation Capital alongside Foundation Capital. Sajid Shariff and Scott Arnold started the company in 2025, and it works across India and the US. Each agent has a named job. Daisy books rooms by voice in more than 90 languages, Alfred answers guest requests, Manny builds staff rosters and Cosmo drives direct bookings and marketing. A team of roughly 20 people handles more than 1 million interactions every month. Hundreds of properties in the US, Canada, UK and Europe use the product, among them Hilton, Wyndham, Best Western and IHG franchises. Why it matters: the new money pays for expansion into India and other markets, so Indian hoteliers will soon hear the pitch that US franchise owners have already bought.

3. Thailand: 580,000 users before launch day

Thailand’s Immigration Bureau launched the THIM app formally on 25 September, though travellers have been able to download it since 1 August. By launch day it had passed 600,000 downloads and 580,000 users, or 97.2% of downloads. For now the app holds the Thailand Digital Arrival Card. Queue booking, certificates of stay, visa extensions, 90-day reporting and visa on arrival are on the roadmap. Grab (Thailand), Minor International, True Corporation and Bangkok Dusit Medical Services signed on as launch partners. Why it matters: arrival data now lives in a state app that sits beside a hotel group, a ride-hailing firm and a hospital network, so the trip begins with the government before any OTA sees the traveller.

4. Japan: US$343.1 billion behind a new partnership

WTTC, the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) and Tourism Expo Japan have joined forces, Hotel News Resource reported. The numbers behind the deal are large. Travel and tourism added US$343.1 billion to Japan’s economy in 2025, or 8.1% of GDP, the fifth biggest total in the world. Foreign visitors spent US$63.3 billion, seventh globally, 8.8% more than a year earlier and 74.9% above 2019. Why it matters: inbound spend in Japan is running three-quarters ahead of its pre-pandemic level, and APAC distribution and marketing budgets tend to follow that kind of curve.

5. Skift Global Forum: “one continuous conversation”

Skift Global Forum 2026 took place at North Javits Center in New York from 22 to 24 September. On stage, Bret Taylor, founder of Sierra and chairman of OpenAI, argued that AI can carry the entire guest relationship as “one continuous conversation”, Skift reported. His warning to the room: “Shipping your org chart should never, ever, ever happen in the world of AI.” The same week, Skift reported a Washington WARN notice from Expedia covering 58 job cuts, 18 of them in data science and machine learning, taking effect between 21 November and 1 December. Why it matters: a traveller passed from a booking bot to a changes bot to a loyalty bot is walking through the company’s org chart, and Taylor told the industry to stop building it that way.

Key takeaway

AI agents in travel stopped being a chat widget this week and became the working layer of the trip, from Thai border entry to Agoda’s planner to the Dextr AI front desk. For every OTA, hotel, airline and tourism board, the question this quarter is who owns that single conversation with the traveller, and whose data feeds it. Our advice: map every point where a guest meets a separate system today, then fold those points into one.

Skift Global Forum 2026 opens in New York City on Tuesday 22 September and runs to 24 September, on a stage that drew 5,983 attendees from 5,391 companies across 92 countries in 2025, 62% of them at director level or above. WiT Singapore follows at Marina Bay Sands from 30 September to 2 October. The previews Skift published this week already name the argument both rooms will have: the money in travel has moved from booking to servicing.

Here are the five threads of the week, one number each, and the names to book meetings with before the rooms fill.

Photo: Skift, via the official press page

1. Spotnana puts a number on servicing: 50%

Spotnana CEO Steve Singh told Skift this week that AI automation can cut servicing costs by 50% or more, and that Spotnana’s AI already handles cancelled flight segments, unticketed flights and refunds. “Servicing. We talk endlessly about search, distribution, and booking. What really matters is what happens after the trip is purchased,” Singh said. Why it matters: for a travel management company or an OTA, servicing is the cost line that grows with every booking, and 50% is the first hard figure a vendor has put on it in public ahead of the forum.

2. Singh’s 95% test for curation

Singh set a second number in the same interview. Curation, on his definition, means presenting the options a traveller would have chosen 95% of the time out of the full available list. Why it matters: that is a testable bar for any agent or search product an operator is being sold, and a question to put to every vendor on the floor in New York and again in Singapore.

3. IHG rebuilds its hotel content for machines

IHG Chief Commercial and Marketing Officer Heather Balsley told Skift that IHG is launching a new content platform later in 2026 and restructuring its hotel content to be machine-readable, so that AI tools surface its properties. She argued that the models will not own the guest relationship. “AI tools can only be as helpful as the content they’re drawing from, so content has become increasingly important,” Balsley said. Why it matters: a global chain treating content as distribution infrastructure sets the bar for every hotel group in Asia Pacific whose room and rate data is not yet readable by an AI agent.

4. WiT Singapore 2026, 30 September to 2 October

WiT Singapore 2026 runs from 30 September to 2 October at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, six days after New York closes. Why it matters: an operator can hear the same argument twice in eight days, once from the US side and once from Asia Pacific’s hotel groups, OTAs and airlines, and the gap between the two answers is the brief for the fourth quarter.

5. PATA and ATTIA sign an MoU in Bangkok

PATA and ATTIA signed a memorandum of understanding in Bangkok on 15 September to run policy dialogue and to support each other’s conferences and webinars across Asia Pacific. Why it matters: two associations pooling their conference calendars means one more organiser-side channel for travel-tech speakers in the region, and one more table where policy on the technology gets argued before it reaches a ministry.

Who to watch

Two names to book before the rooms fill. Steve Singh of Spotnana, on the 50% servicing figure and the 95% curation bar, and on which servicing tasks the AI handles without a human today. Heather Balsley of IHG, on the content platform due later in 2026 and what machine-readable hotel content looks like in practice for a property in Tokyo or Taipei. In Singapore, the WiT programme team, whose three days at Marina Bay Sands are the Asia Pacific reading of the same agenda.

Key takeaway

Fly to New York if the servicing cost line is on the fourth-quarter plan, and put Singh’s two numbers, 50% and 95%, to every vendor on the floor. Fly to Singapore if the business runs on Asia Pacific supply, because the same argument will be made again at Marina Bay Sands with the region’s hotels, OTAs and airlines in the room. If only one trip is possible from Asia, we would take Singapore and read the Skift sessions from the desk.

Wyndham Hotels and Resorts has placed its own agents inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, supplying the three assistants with real-time rates, inventory, guaranteed room types and personalised loyalty perks, Skift reported on Thursday. The report previews the company’s session at Skift Global Forum in New York next week and sets out Wyndham’s wider AI strategy for search and distribution.

The move reverses the usual order. Most hotel groups wait for the models to find them, live with whatever the model has scraped, and hope the recommendation comes out right. Wyndham is feeding the models directly, so a traveller who asks an assistant for a room gets the group’s own rate and its own loyalty benefit rather than a third-party summary. Hotels, OTAs and the loyalty teams inside both are the ones this hits first. The approach amounts to a hotel AI distribution strategy that breaks into five decisions, each one small enough for a hotel group or OTA of any size to copy.

1. Put the agent where the traveller already is

Wyndham’s first step was a native app inside ChatGPT, launched on 6 May 2026. Users explore its hotels on a map, with amenity filters and hotel cards, without leaving the chat, then complete the booking on WyndhamHotels.com, the company said in its launch announcement. The agents now inside Claude and Gemini extend the same conversational AI hotel booking model. The assistant does the discovery and Wyndham keeps the transaction.

2. Point AI at the AI

The second step is the one most groups skip. Wyndham uses AI to monitor how travellers phrase long-form searches inside the assistants, then adjusts the data it supplies in response. After seeing searches for beach hotels with “dedicated beaches with umbrella coverage”, it added that detail to its feeds. The feed is treated as a living product, rewritten around the questions people actually ask, not a one-off export from the property system.

3. Give the agents something to sell

An agent with nothing to upsell is a brochure. More than 5,000 hotels are live on Wyndham Connect, which generated over USD 11 million in upsells in 2025. The Wyndham AI Concierge converts 35 per cent of calls into bookings. Franchisee retention stands at 96 per cent, which matters because every feed and every perk the agents offer depends on owners staying in the system.

4. Fund it over years, not quarters

None of this came from a single budget line. Wyndham has invested more than USD 450 million in technology since 2018. AI has cut its average call centre handle times by 7 per cent. The company says top-performing hotels averaged more than USD 60,000 in incremental revenue, with the highest above USD 200,000. Those are property-level numbers, which is how a franchisor persuades owners to keep paying for the platform year after year.

5. Partner rather than build everything

“Conversational AI is reshaping how travelers discover and book,” said Scott Strickland, chief commercial officer at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, in the ChatGPT app announcement. The partners Wyndham names are the model companies themselves, OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, alongside Oracle, Amazon, Adobe, Salesforce, Canary and Aven Hospitality. The group’s own work sits in the feeds, the loyalty rules and the booking path. The models and the middleware are bought in.

Who to watch

Geoff Ballotti, president and CEO of Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, is a confirmed speaker at Skift Global Forum 2026 at the North Javits Center in New York on 22 to 24 September. His session is the place to hear Wyndham’s AI strategy laid out by the company itself, with the numbers behind the Claude and Gemini agents. Organisers planning an AI distribution panel for hotel owners have a ready-made case study in this one, and a franchise-heavy operator is the version of that story most owners in Japan, India and Singapore can act on.

Key takeaway

We read this as the first published AI distribution playbook that works below the luxury tier, and the cost of copying it is mostly discipline rather than money. Any hotel group or OTA with a loyalty programme and a live rate feed should test steps one and two this quarter: expose a rate feed to at least one assistant and start reading the long-form queries that come back. Groups without a direct booking path to hand the assistant to can wait, because an agent that passes the transaction to someone else is just a new commission line.

Five stories this week, four of them from Asia, and each lands on a decision a hotel, airline or OTA leader has to take within a quarter: connectivity as a product, open-network distribution in India, an airport selling its operating model, AI booking at the front door, and a visa fee that repriced a bilateral market in seven days.

1. Korean Air switches on free Starlink from 15 September

From 15 September 2026, long-haul passengers on Korean Air get Starlink satellite internet at no charge, according to Travel And Tour World. The same outlet calls the carrier the first full-service airline in East Asia to give Starlink away, and reads the move as the start of a wider shift on passenger connectivity across the region. The number that matters is zero. Once one full-service carrier gives satellite internet away, a paid Wi-Fi tab on a competing long-haul product becomes something passengers notice at booking, not at 35,000 feet. Every airline commercial team in APAC now has to decide whether connectivity is a fee, a loyalty perk or part of the fare, and the decision has a date on it.

Photo: Theodore Nguyen / Pexels

2. Visa and ONDC look at inbound discovery for India

Visa and India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce are working on how arriving visitors find what to do in the country, a report this week said. In the same week, at GFF 2026 in Mumbai, NPCI showed a unified ticketing product and extended RuPay credit on UPI to the US and UAE, per Inc42. Put the two together and the direction is clear. India’s payment rails and its open commerce network are being pointed at inbound travellers, not only at residents. For a hotel, DMC or attraction selling into India, the question is how your inventory shows up on a network where no single OTA owns discovery. That is a distribution decision, and it needs an owner inside the company before the pilots harden into standards.

3. Incheon puts its playbook up for sale

Incheon, which now ranks as the busiest hub in the world, wants buyers for the way it runs the airport, Nikkei Asia reported. That changes what an airport is. Incheon is treating its operating model as a product with customers rather than a cost centre with passengers. Every airport authority and tourism board in APAC that is building or expanding a hub now has a vendor holding the busiest-hub credential. Expect the pitch to arrive with the data, and expect the buyers to ask what the airlines and ground handlers at Incheon get out of it.

4. AI booking gains ground in China and South Korea

Travellers in China and South Korea are taking to AI booking tools fast enough to trouble the traditional agent, Travel And Tour World reported this week, with Fliggy and Eastar Jet both widening digital booking as demand in the two countries rises. On the destination side, Nikkei Asia reported that Huawei has launched an AI tourism promotion service for the Xi’an region. Two countries, two ends of the funnel, one week. The intermediaries losing share are the ones whose value was access to inventory, and access is now table stakes. The desk’s view is that advice, accountability and a human to call when the itinerary breaks are what survive, and those are the parts most agents have been slowest to price.

5. China raises its visa fee sevenfold for Japanese visitors

Japanese visitors to China now pay seven times the previous visa fee, a change Beijing attributes to reciprocity, per Nikkei Asia. Seven is the number. For a Japanese corporate travel manager or a Chinese DMC selling to Japanese groups, that is a cost line that moved in a week with no product change behind it. Policy-driven pricing belongs in the demand forecast, not in a footnote to it, and the revenue teams that model it will price better than the ones that read about it afterwards.

The fortnight’s event board

WiT Singapore 2026 at Marina Bay Sands has Agoda, Google and companies from more than 30 countries confirmed. Malaysia Airlines has signed seven partnerships aimed at growing Asia Pacific tourism, which gives the partnership panels in the region something concrete to argue about. For organisers: the week’s stories converge on one topic, agentic and open-network distribution in APAC, and a panel on it needs someone who has built on these rails rather than only read about them. If your autumn agenda has that slot, I am taking invitations. Write to the desk.

Key takeaway

The pattern this week is Asia deciding first and the rest of the market reacting. Free satellite Wi-Fi, an open discovery network for inbound India and an airport selling its operating model are product decisions that used to be cost decisions. Pick the one nearest your P&L and put a number on it before the quarter closes. The carriers, hotels and platforms waiting for a Western benchmark will end up answering to one set in Seoul, Mumbai or Beijing.

The Inside View

RateGain paid $16.1 million for the acquisition, with an upfront payment of $14.6 million and a deferred payment of $1.5 million to be paid in one year.

ADARA has raised a total of $67.1 million in funding over six rounds, with World Innovation Lab (WiL) and QuestMark Partners as the lead investors. As of September 14, 2015, ADARA had a post-money valuation of $100 million to $500 million. Source: Crunchbase

Though the dipping revenues over the course of the last three years of the pandemic made this decision by Adara an inevitable move for sustenance and growth. Source: Tracxn

Deal Differentiators

Commenting on the acquisition Bhanu Chopra, Chairman and Founder, RateGain said, “We are delighted to welcome the Adara team to the RateGain family. Adara’s key differentiator is its access to permissioned travel-intent data from the World’s top travel and hospitality players as well as the destination marketing organisations and relying less on traditional methods of tracking consumer intent. Their focus on innovation and delivering customer excellence has me convinced that together we will help the industry with reliable end-to-end intent and real-time pricing insights making it simpler for them to identify guests, acquire and retain them.”

As per the investor presentation by RateGain, Adara will bolster both the DaaS and Martech business lines of RateGain while providing a strong moat for the business with 70+ data partners and expanding the footprint across all industry segments. Adara comes in with a strong profile, further bolstering the expansion and dominance of RateGain in the travel and hospitality industries.

The Bigger Picture

A platform like this is necessary today for the industry to react to shifting customer expectations.

Travellers are increasingly turning to digital channels for inspiration, research, booking, and engagement, making it more expensive for brands to attract them as customers.

As a result of rising costs and the desire for more distinctive experiences, customers are looking to test out various brands that can offer them more value through individualised experiences and offers, but brands that don’t offer these perks are losing out to competitors who do.

Our Take on the News

Even though leaving when you’re at the top of your game makes sense in this situation, the marketing landscape is drastically changing, making a data-driven strategy, the use of artificial intelligence to study consumer purchase behaviour, their interaction in the online world, technology enablement for seamless platform transitions, and curating experiential offerings all essential.

The timing of this transaction is unquestionably ideal, aiding the recovery of the tourism and hospitality sectors. Watching how this takeover develops and creates value in the near future will be intriguing.

One of the most important things while travelling is to stay connected. Connectivity comes with the internet and staying charged. While WiFi is something for which you are reliant on the service provider, staying charged is in your control.

Different regions have different charging ports, for instance, Australian charging ports are very different compared to those in the EU. In addition, while you’re travelling you need to charge multiple devices not just for yourself but for your friends/family.

In recent years, one company that has been innovating how charging is done is OneAdaptr. OneAdaptr primarily focuses on providing travel power solutions for international travellers and makes the entire charging experience super simple and seamless.

One of their new offerings is OneWorld 65, a super smart international adapter with 65W PD charger. OneWorld 65, comes with the following features:

1 x 65W USB PD charging port with QC

2 x USB C Smart charging port

2 x USB A Smart charging port

10A AC universal power outlet

Support in over 200+ countries

What is a PD charger?

A Power Delivery (PD) charger connects to your MacBook via USB-C. The chargers can support up to 240W of power, however, the common standard that is used is 45W, 65W and 100W.

We tested OneWorld 65 in multiple countries including Australia, Malaysia and India and after a series of experiences in these countries, we can only say that the adapter is a big game-changer if you’re a business traveller, digital nomad or live between airports. It literally fits into any socket in the world and makes the stress of finding compatible plugs a thing of past.

SPECIFICATIONS

Input: 100-240V

Output (USB-C PD): 18W max, 5V3a, 9V3a, 12V1.5a

Weight: 178.2 g / 6.29 oz

OneAdaptr has also created MacMate, which turns a MacBook charger Into a wireless charging solution.

How does MacMate work?

MacMate is a charging hub that can charge devices in the Apple ecosystem. It requires a 60W+ charger to make it a charging hub. It is a lightweight device with 2 charging ports and a wireless charging pad. You can charge Apple Watch using the wireless charging pad and use the two charging ports to charge iPhone, iPad or AirPods.
